Walz, Vance: Everything you need to know about vice president debate

The vice presidential debate is set as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance gear up to take the stage after both accepted an invitation from CBS News.
The outlet said this week that it invited both candidates to debate in New York on Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and Oct. 8. Kamala Harris’ running mate confirmed on X Wednesday that he agreed to debate Donald Trump’s, writing “See you on October 1, JD.”
In a Fox News appearance the same day, Vance said that he probably would debate Walz on that date but that he first needed to consider the proposed moderators and rules surrounding the showdown. Vance confirmed Thursday on X that he accepted the Oct. 1 invitation and that he’d also like to debate Sept. 18.
“The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already,” Vance wrote in reply to Walz. “I look forward to seeing you at both!”
Here’s what we currently know about the 2024 vice president debate:
The 2024 vice presidential debate will be on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
An official time has not been set for the debate.
The channel for CBS News, which invited both candidates to debate, is CBS. CBS also allows audiences to watch their live news stream through their website.
CBS News said evening news anchor Norah O’Donnell and “Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan will moderate the Oct. 1 debate.
Walz is the governor of Minnesota and is Harris’ running mate. He became governor in 2019 after six terms in the House.
Walz, 60, is a longtime lawmaker representing the state and a former high school football coach.
Vance is the Ohio senator who Trump picked as his running mate.
Vance has drawn criticism for referencing his Appalachian roots in Breathitt County in recent campaign appearances, which were also outlined in his 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Though Vance grew up in Middletown, Ohio, he wrote he visited family in Jackson, Kentucky each summer.
